Get to Cleaning
Spring is a wonderful time to take on often-neglected tasks such as cleaning the garage or the basement. Get rid of junk and gunk that might have accrued over the past several months, and reorganize any storage areas. Plus, it’s one of the best times to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Check Your Gutters
Over time, leaves, muck, and debris can clog your gutters and downspouts. Putting off repairs and cleaning could cause some problems later, so be sure to tackle the task now. Once you’ve cleared the foreign material from the gutters, check that the downspouts send the water at least five feet from your home’s structure.
Dryer Lint
It’s easy enough to clean the dryer lint from the screen with every load, but did you know that lint still builds up in the machine and the ducts? That build-up can become a fire hazard, so it’s important to clean it out. All you have to do is disconnect the vent from the back of your machine and remove the lint with a dryer vent brush or a strong vacuum. Also brush the lint from the external dryer vent cover outside your home.
Give Your Windows Some Love
Grime can accumulate without you even noticing, but you’ll sure see a difference once you’ve cleaned it up. If you can wash both the inside and outside of your windows to get the glass clean. And don’t forget the screens! You can wash them in your tub or utility sink (or even your kitchen sink) with a rag and some mild soapy water. Repair any breaks or replace screens that are beyond repair. Once the windows and screens are done, do some maintenance on your window treatments. Dust blinds and shades, and vacuum treatments like Silhouette® using the brush attachment. Compressed air is great for cleaning out cellular shades such as Duette® Honeycomb Shades. If your aluminum or faux wood blinds (such as Everwood® Alternative Wood Blinds or Modern Precious Metals® Aluminum Blinds) are particularly grimy, you can remove them and clean them with lukewarm water in a bathtub or sink.
