Many interior designers recommend that you set a room’s focal point and decorate around that point to best achieve the look you want for the space. But at Treasure Coast Window Fashions here in Stuart, Florida, many of our customers are unsure of how to determine the true focal point of a room. Luckily, it’s not that difficult a science. Read on for a few tips!
Follow Your Eye
The best rule of thumb for determining focal point is to see where your eye is naturally drawn. It might be the window, a larger item of furniture, the television, the fireplace, or particular artwork. Frequently, because windows carry a strong line and are defined by natural light, they end up being the focal point.
If Your Window Is the Focal Point
To ensure that your design works well surrounding the window, keep in mind a few factors. Remember that you’ll want the window to be attractive not only from the inside but also from outside. Also, window treatments will advance or recede into a room based on color, texture, and pattern. Neutral colors and linen textures will add softness, while adding layers through drapery or side panels can add depth and drama through color or pattern. Color will make a window advance into the room and can make other design elements recede. One approach to “dressing” the window is to act as though you’re framing a painting. If you use too heavy a treatment, it will detract from the rest of the room; if you keep the treatment lighter or more neutral, your eye will be freer to take in the other elements in the space. To help your window treatments look the best from the outside, make them match as best as possible by ensuring they are the same color and carry the same lines.
Styles of Windows
Always be sure to keep in mind your view through the window. If it’s attractive, accentuate it; if it’s not, play it down. Also, consider how the window treatment functions:
- With horizontal openings, you can opt for things like the top-down/bottom-up operating feature, which lets you open from the top, from the bottom, or both simultaneously. You might select this feature for a kitchen, a bedroom, or a bathroom, and you can add it to Hunter Douglas horizontal products such as Provenance® Woven Woods, Duette® Cellular Shades, and Solera® Soft Shades.
- With sliders or larger windows, look for a vertically oriented treatment, which can open in the middle or to one side, or it can totally disappear. Some vertical products from Hunter Douglas include Vignette® Modern Roman Shades, Duette® Vertiglide™ Cellular Shades, and Skyline® Gliding Panels.
