Even though both drapes and curtains are made with fabric, they are definitely not the same, especially in type of fabric and its length. You’ll find that drapes are usually made of thicker fabrics like velvet and are often lined for glare resistance and insulation. They’re usually the longer of the window fashions and tend to lend a more formal look to a room. Curtains, on the other hand, are most often made from sheer fabrics like cotton, so they’re better able to let more natural light into the room. They tend to be cut just at the windowsill or slightly below, creating a more casual vibe. Because they’re more formal and longer, drapes are better for bedrooms and living rooms, while shorter and more casual curtains do well in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms.

The two products offer different functionalities. With their heavier and longer fabric, drapes are a good option for privacy and light control and well as for blocking light and absorbing sound. Curtains allow in more natural light but won’t necessarily help with privacy. Looking at your space, think about how each type is installed—while both can hang on a rod, curtains, with their lighter fabric, can hang on a tension rod, but drapery can’t.
Third Difference
Maintaining these products is different. Drapery requires more effort because it needs to be professionally cleaned.
