Opacity is about how much light can come through, so you can see how getting the right level of opacity for your window treatment is important. But how do you know the “right” level? At Treasure Coast Window Fashions here in Stuart, Florida, we like to help our clients understand all facets of window fashions, so they can make the best-informed decision for their homes. And that includes opacity. Check out our thoughts below.
Opacity Levels
When you look at fabrics, you can see that some are clearly thicker or heavier than others, so you’d probably assume they don’t let as much light through. But what is the naming convention for that? Here are the levels you’ll hear about when it comes to window treatment selection:
- Sheer fabrics let a lot of light through the window while providing a soft view-through. They can help reduce glare but don’t help much with privacy.
- Semi-sheer fabrics will block a small amount of light. The view-through is less than for sheer fabrics, and although the privacy level is greater, it’s not by much.
- Semi-opaque fabrics let enough light through to brighten the room a little, but they don’t really offer any view-through. On the flip side, their privacy levels are greater.
- Opaque/room-darkening fabrics will block nearly light and provide almost total privacy. That said, the only way to get natural light is to open the treatment.
- Blackout fabrics, of course, block light almost entirely, while offering complete privacy.
Opacity Levels for Each Room
To determine the fabric that’s best for your window treatment, think about the room’s privacy and light needs. For lots of light in a room that doesn’t require much privacy control (such as a living room or family room) you can go with sheer or semi-sheer fabrics. For more privacy control in a room you’d like to keep dark (such as a bedroom, bathroom, or media room), go with semi-opaque, opaque, or blackout fabrics.
