You’ve seen them on anything from sweaters to blankets—fabric pills. You might think they’re impossible to deal with, but in fact, we’ve got a few tips that can help. At Treasure Coast Window Fashions serving Jensen Beach, we carry the full line of Hunter Douglas window fashions because we’re proud of their high quality. But every fabric has the ability to pill, including ours, so we’re happy to help you understand how it happens and how to resolve it. Read on!
What Causes Pilling?
Fabrics are made of individual fibers, which are prone to loosening. When they’re loose, the fibers move to the surface of the fabric, and friction twists them into small pills. The other fibers twist with the pills, anchoring them to the fabric. You’ll see this most frequently with human-made fabrics, which are oftentimes blends (like cotton-poly) that cause stronger holds. Pilling can be triggered by a variety of elements, including how much moisture in the air and whether the fabric might rub against something frequently. Some items, like fleecy tracksuits or blankets, can even transfer pills to furniture fabric through abrasion. Technically, you can’t prevent pilling because it’s just a natural part of the process for fabric fibers. However, you can reduce the occurrence by avoiding rubbing the fabric, and not letting Velcro touch it.
Treating the Pills
To get rid of the pills, simply remove the loose surface fibers with either a battery-operated pill shaver or a pill comb. Both of those items should be at your local fabric or sewing store. Note that removing the pills will not impact the quality or performance of the fabric, and even if pilling reoccurs, it will be lessened and will eventually diminish because all of the extra, loose fibers will be gone. If you’ve noticed pilling on one of your fabric Hunter Douglas window fashions and are concerned about how to handle it, feel free to contact a Treasure Coast Window Fashions representative. We’ll be more than happy to offer advice.
