These days, the lightbulb aisle in the local hardware store can seem like a jumble of confusing options, and it can be overwhelming to choose the right bulb for a room’s needs. At Treasure Coast Window Fashions serving Jensen Beach, we’re more than happy to help unclutter the information so you can light your home correctly. Read on to learn more!
LED Lightbulbs
Bulbs come in different sizes, shapes, strengths, and colors. The bulb’s box will give you information including how many watts the bulb uses, how many lumens it projects (a measure of brightness, usually a range from 300 to 1,600 per bulb), and its temperature (the lower the Kelvin rating, the warmer the light, and the higher the Kelvin rating the cooler and brighter the light). The last two numbers will help you decide how to meet your lighting needs for each room. For instance, in the kitchen, where you want good workspace light, find a total of 5,000 to 9,000 lumens and a temperature around 4,000 Kelvin. Other examples include:
- In a bedroom, a lower Kelvin rating will be better than the higher, more energizing rating, so look for something between 2,700 to 3,000 Kelvin. If you read before bed, try for a lamp with neutral tones and avoid cooling lighting that creates contrast with the pages. Total lumens should range from 2,500 to 4,000.
- Bathrooms are for shaving, makeup application, and more. Position the lighting around the mirror—consider the larger globe bulbs with a total of 5,000 to 7,500 lumens and a Kelvin rating around 4,000.
- Family rooms are gathering spaces, with lots of uses. You’ll want a variety of light sources (from below and from above), and you should look to a total of 2,000 to 3,500 lumens for the room, with color temperature around 2,700 Kelvin.
